Frequently Asked Questions

Technical, commercial and after-sales answers about telescopic seating systems — drawn from nearly two decades of project experience. Can’t find your answer? Our engineers are one message away.

Load Capacity & Safety

How much weight can a telescopic stand carry? Is there any safety risk?

Every IEQ telescopic stand is load-tested and supplied with a quality inspection report. Our stands typically bear about 500 kg per square metre — for example, a stand configured for 100 seats can safely support the weight of more than 300 people.

What are the requirements for the floor beneath the stand?

The floor should support at least 400 kg per square metre, with flatness within 8 mm per 10 m². Hard surfaces are recommended — epoxy floor paint, ceramic tiles, terrazzo or timber flooring (with reinforced joists).

Soft surfaces such as vinyl or carpet are not recommended, as they mark easily or ruck up under the wheels. If soft flooring is already installed, reinforced PVC base plates can be added as part of the project design.

How is the stand kept stable and prevented from moving?

The base of the stand is anchored to the floor and the upper rear is fixed to the wall. Once fully extended, the stand will not shift.

Power Supply & Electrical

What power supply is required?

A standard installation uses a 380 V supply with a 25 A socket or air switch, and a 4-core × 4 mm² cable. Where three-phase power is not available, a 220 V supply is also sufficient to drive the stand.

Does a retractable stand consume a lot of electricity?

Power draw is roughly 0.75–3 kW and the motor runs only for a very short time each cycle, so energy consumption is negligible in normal use.

What brand are the motors?

Standard models use domestic Harley motors. High-end configurations can be supplied with Siemens electronic control systems.

Can the stand be extended only partially?

Yes, in principle — tell us your scenario in advance and we will fit the necessary components during production and installation.

Space, Layout & Structure

What are the advantages over traditional concrete tiering?

Concrete or steel tiering is costly, occupies a large footprint and locks the venue into a single use. Telescopic stands allow a seating layout to be designed around your exact floor dimensions, and when retracted they free the hall for other uses — events, banqueting, rehearsals, exhibitions, sports and more. Cost-wise, fixed tiering and telescopic seating are comparable.

Can the stand be built in a curved or arc shape?

Yes. IEQ has proprietary technology for arc-shaped retractable stands. Alternatively, several trapezoidal units can be combined into a curved configuration.

Can a doorway be left in the stand for audience access?

Yes — this is a common requirement. The opening is specially designed and reinforced, and fitted with safety railings so the audience can enter and exit directly without walking around the ends of the stand.

What step width should I choose?

A standard step width is 900 mm, comfortable for seated people to cross their legs. If you want people to be able to pass along the row while others are seated, the row spacing should be at least 1,100 mm.

What ceiling height is needed?

Step height starts at 300 mm per tier (325 mm for the first tier), and each tier holds 1–2 rows of seats. Allow at least 2 m of clearance above the last row. Example: with a 4 m ceiling you can fit 7 tiers — total height 6×0.3 + 0.325 = 2.125 m, leaving 1.875 m above the last row, enough for a person to stand upright.

What is the minimum and maximum step height?

Standard is 325 mm for the first tier and 300 mm above that; the minimum can be reduced to 280 mm. The maximum depends on the seat model and is not restricted.

Can the whole stand be moved?

Stands can be moved forward and backward without limit. A single unit of fewer than 200 seats can be moved in all directions using a mobile mechanism. Fully powered units can also be driven in any direction — similar to a remote-controlled vehicle — generally for groups of up to 110 people, at a higher cost.

Seats, Writing Boards & Materials

Can the seats be fitted with a writing board?

Yes. We offer front-mounted and rear-mounted writing board solutions, including:

  • Front-mounted tablet arm, similar to the Maybach-style writing pad
  • Rotating writing board on the rear-flip luxury seat
  • Front desk combined with a rear fixed writing board

The last three are IEQ exclusive patented technologies.

What is the difference between semi-automatic and fully automatic seats?

Both are rear-mounted seats (the mechanism sits in the rear section of the tier). Semi-automatic seats are folded and unfolded manually; fully automatic seats do this electrically. The fully automatic version costs roughly 30% more.

What materials are used for the step surfaces?

Two options: plywood with vinyl flooring or carpet (colours selectable), or high-density board with a melamine veneer (pattern and colour selectable).

What are the guardrails made of? Do they need to be fitted manually?

Standard guardrails are steel or stainless steel. Both can be designed to extend and retract in sync with the stand, with no manual insertion required. Manually removable versions and electrically flipping guardrails are also available.

How are the open sides of the stand covered?

The sides can be closed with velvet curtains or wooden panels (colours selectable), which also protects people during operation.

Can colours be customised? Do you provide renderings?

Fabric, steel frame and timber colours can all be customised to your requirement, and we can produce a visual rendering of the finished installation.

Ordering, Lead Time & Payment

Is there a minimum order quantity, and how does quantity affect cost?

Minimum order is 40 seats. All products are custom-made to size rather than standard stock items, so quantity has a significant effect on unit cost: both a 40-seat and a 400-seat stand require a complete electrical control system, and installation travel costs are also largely fixed. The fewer the seats, the higher the cost per seat.

How long is production lead time?

Front-mounted retractable stands: 30 days to shipment. Rear-mounted seats: 45 days. Fully automatic seats: 60 days. Orders over 10,000 seats take longer.

What are the payment terms?

Standard terms are 30% deposit on contract signature, balance before shipment. Terms for tender projects can be negotiated.

Can you support a tender / bid process?

Yes. We hold complete qualifications, dozens of domestic and international test reports and numerous patent certificates, which fully meet the documentation requirements of public tenders.

Installation, Export & Relocation

Does the stand have to be installed by the manufacturer?

Within China we recommend installation by our professional crews to guarantee quality and schedule. For export orders we send 1–2 skilled technicians to supervise installation on site.

Can your products be exported? How is installation handled overseas?

Yes — we hold full export qualifications and ship to customers worldwide. For international projects we supply installation manuals and drawings with live video guidance. For selected countries our technicians can attend site to supervise, with the customer covering labour and travel costs.

Is training provided after installation?

Yes. After installation our technicians provide one-to-one training on operation and routine maintenance for your staff, and a troubleshooting guide is included in the manual.

If we relocate, can the stand be moved with us?

Yes. The seating is a modular structure that can be repeatedly dismantled and re-installed, either by our technicians or with paid video guidance. Note that some wear and material loss occurs during dismantling, so replacement parts may be required.

Can you supply the stage? Can it be retractable?

Yes. Stages are made to order in three types: fixed stage, elevating stage and retractable stage.

Can row desks be supplied with the stand?

Yes — with a tier width of 1,200 mm or more, each row can be fitted with conventional row desks (manually positioned) or fully automatic row desks.

After-Sales, Warranty & Certifications

How is after-sales support handled, and what is the warranty period?

IEQ has service offices across China. On receiving a report we respond within 2 hours; in special cases our staff reach site within 24 hours and resolve the issue within 48 hours. Electrical components are warranted for 1 year, all other parts for 3 years — terms can be adjusted to suit your contract.

What happens if a fault occurs during use?

Our installation team trains your on-site operators and walks through common issues; the manual also includes a troubleshooting guide. If a fault occurs, contact us first and we will resolve it by video guidance or an on-site visit.

What are the charges after the warranty expires?

Issues outside warranty are quoted case by case; only the cost of parts and labour is charged.

What certifications do you hold?

High-Tech Enterprise certification, Quality Management System certification, Environmental Management System certification, Occupational Health & Safety Management System certification, plus 3A credit-rating and integrity certificates (contract honouring, quality service, enterprise credit). We also hold numerous utility model and design patents, and domestic and international test reports.
